Funds for Open Access Scholarly Books

This page lists research funders and research organisations (including universities, university departments, research institutions and research libraries), which have built funds to cover costs associated with book publications into their grants or established separate funds (sometimes called gold open access funds), which can be used by researchers to cover processing charges for scholarly books and monographs. Further explanatory notes about this list can be found at the end of this webpage.

• Research Councils UK (RCUK) (The open access mandate does not currently apply to books, but processing charges for scholarly books can be covered via RCUK block grants. RCUK provides block grants to most universities in the UK. Therefore, book processing charges may be covered by several UK universities based on block grants. This is sometimes complemented by institutional funds, which are listed here separately. The RCUK policy applies to the following research councils: Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC), Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC), Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), Medical Research Council (MRC), Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) and the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC).)

Explanatory notes

Although the organisations in this list are grouped by country (or region), this doesn't mean that only researchers from that country or region are eligible. Institutional gold open access funds will often provide support to cover book processing charges, especially in co-funding scenarios.
